Bored with Skin Tattoos, Chinese Youths Are Increasingly Turning to Tooth Tattoos Instead

According to a report by Chinese media outlet Guangming, tooth tattoos are emerging as a new trend among China’s younger generations.

Engraving symbols and images on your teeth sounds like a bad idea if you value oral health, but tooth tattoos are not quite as stupid as they sound. They are not tattooed directly on the teeth but on the surface of a crown made using 3D printing technology and then placed over the real tooth. One of the main appeals is that, unlike skin tattoos, which can’t easily be removed, tooth tattoos can be changed by simply replacing the crown. While some believe that skin tattoos are outdated and tooth tattoos are a new and cool way to express oneself, others simply opt for it when offered as a service by dental clinics. Instead of a bland crown, they can get a personalized model that makes them stand out or brings them luck.

When deciding on tooth tattoos, some people opt for their romantic partners’ initials, their lucky numbers, or even fortune-bringing phrases like “making money” or “achieving goals”. The trend has become so popular that large dental clinics have begun advertising tooth tattoos as a free bonus for getting crowns done at their branches.

Although tooth tattoos are definitely getting a lot of positive feedback on Chinese social media these days, not everyone recommends them. For example, one Shanghai dentist told China.com that engraving letters or designs on crowns is not medically recommended as it can reduce the strength of the crown and increase wear.

Tooth tattoos are far from the weirdest or craziest beauty trend we’ve ever covered. They don’t even come close to Thailand’s “horn-shaped lips,”  or South Korea’s shoulder filler trend.
